We don't use shampoo in this house

These were the words of my current host family. As the host auntie was showing me the shower and I was getting the girls ready for thier showers, I asked if there was some shampoo that the girls could use. She looked at me and said, well we don't really use that stuff here, but maybe I can find some in the back of my closet. As she dug around for shampoo, my question to myself was, well then what the heck do you use to wash your hair? Surely, there must be some herb or something to replace it..but yuck! Then, as the girls were brushing thier teeth, the host families kids came in and started brushing thiers as well. As the kids began spitting in the bathtub, the host auntie explained, oh we just let them spit in the bathtub becuase they can't reach the sink..." Ewwww.... And then, poor Jenny, the host auntie asked her if she wouldn't mind babysitting for her kids while her and her husband went out to lunch. Today's Jenny's day off. The things people will ask of us... i couldn't believe it! :)

Wood ticks and allergies, and the turning of 23!

It is now June 1st, and we've been touring for almost nine months. We are now in Winnepeg, Manitoba. We're back in the heartland, now the heartland of Canada, which I must say is much more remote then even the heartland in the US was. In Manitoba, the biggest "city" is Winnepeg, with a couple hundred thousand people... the next biggest "city" only has 40,000, and the third biggest has 10,000.... In Manitoba, the people classify anything over 10,000 is considered a "city." I personally think that's hilarous, as I wouldn't consider it a city unless there was I don't know at least several hundred thousand, if that... no probably not if it was under a million. Wierd, country hick people:) Anyways, the latest thing i've been dealing with are crop allergies and wood ticks, and hoping the host family has something other then dial up internet. Apparently, wood ticks like to crawl in the most innoportune places, so I've been checking whenever I'm outside with the kids.
For my birthday yesterday, I was greeted with cheers, and Enid and Sarah spent 15 minutes preparing me a lovely bouquet of wildflowers from the host family yard. I told the kids they needed to "spoil" me for my birthday. I had to explain to them what spoiling me was, but the boys I stayed with collected dandilions and gave me a bouquet from the yard, so I got two sets of flowers. :) Yay for birthdays!
